Vintage Flea Time

I love flea markets. I love vintage marts too. If I ever am having the "mean reds" as Holly Golightly would say, I like to go stroll through the Wertz Brothers Antique Mart in Santa Monica. If I am feeling really adventurous on a weekend I like to hit the Rosebowl, Long Beach Flea market, Pasadena City College or this one that I just discovered when I went on assignment for Angeleno Magazine in Irvine. The Groves Antique Market is smaller than some of the more well know ones but defiinetly filled with some treasures. I did find some beautiful mexican silver earrings inlayed with mother of pearl. I also stumbled on a great deal of a vintage saki set. For some reason I only bought one bowl and two of the saki bottles when I should have bought the whole lot. They were all less than ten dollars! The flea is the first sunday of every month.

Ahwahnee in the Sacred Valley

My grandmother was happiest in Yosemite since she spent many hours there with my grandfather and when my mother was a little girl. They camped, fished on the Merced river and hiked back when there were firefall spectacles off Glacier Point. There are a several photographs of my grandparents in Yosemite, and through osmosis I have always felt a kinship towards the majestic park as it was in the 1940's and 1950's. My parents had their honeymoon at the Ahwahnee Hotel which sits in the most awe inspiring spot in Yosemite. This made Yosemite the ideal place for my Grandmother's memorial last month. The Miwok Indians knew a few things about sacredness and you can feel their energy and presence. What is genius about the grand hotel built by Gilbert Stanley Underwood in 1927, is that what gives the hotel the wood rustic feeling, is in fact concrete painted to match the terrain. That is partly why it has been preserved so beautifully from harsh conditions and fires. The hotel sits in such a magical spot, that from our particular room we could see Half Dome above us and Old Captain to the left of us. It truly was an auspicious way to wake up and greet the day. Be warned though there is usually a 6 month to one year waiting list for reservations.

Shelter Me!

This takes glamping to a whole new level! Shelter co is a brilliant concept out of San Francisco. A pop up camping experience with European style canvas tents set up where ever your heart desires. What a perfect surprise birthday or anniversary gift for a loved one: to blindfold them, drive them to the woods in the Sequoias and . . .  presto! A brilliant camp set up with all the necessities an urban dweller would need but with added panache and style!

Moon Canyon Girl

Kristen Cassie is the ultimate flower child. Her designs at Moon Canyon are a perfect expression of her gentle and lovely spirit.

1) What was your inspiration for Moon Canyon Design?
With Moon Canyon I really wanted to have a place I could pour all of my creative energy into. As a designer I have had the opportunity to work side by side with some amazing business owners/designers in the industry. That balance of work and creativity was always appealing. I really love seeing a project from the ground up! By starting my own floral studio I have given myself the space to be both creative and business minded. Its not work if you have fun doing it right?
2) Where do you like to get your florals?
I work with some wonderful vendors at the Downtown LA Flower Market. If I need something special like garden roses or clematis vine I have a few local growers I like to use. But mainly I go through the flower market.
3) What is your favorite meal?
 Tea and oranges.
4) Are you a mermaid or forest fairy?
Forest Fairy! I am at peace in the forest with the pine trees, cedar, ferns, and moss.
5) I understand you are a kundalini girl. what do you enjoy about the practice?
I enjoy the perspective the journey allows me to have. The practice helps me to have a beautiful dialog with myself. Which is invaluable in todays busy busy world. I get to check all my thoughts at the door and be still.
6) What book is on your nightstand?
Im a poetry gal! You will always find Emily Dickinson's complete works on my nightstand...great words to dream on.
7) What product is always in your purse?
Rose water.
