Salt Lamps = Cosy Times

Since taking the television out of my bedroom a year ago, I have now officially made my nest into the cosy sanctuary I have always dreamed of. Stacks of books by the bed, fresh cut flowers from my garden, and now the ultimate in new age ambiance . . . a salt lamp from the the Himalayans. I ordered mine from Solay but they are now available on Amazon and Target. The lamps omit the positive ions that we receive when being by the sea and clear the air for better breathing. They also filter out the electro magnetic waves which are constantly assaulting us. The apricot amber glow really does seem to sooth the senses.  In addition to mine, I bought a mini one to connect to my older daughter's lap top, and though she may grumble I see it glowing in her room at night! The seed has been planted . . .

Woolworths is back . . . Green maven Priscilla

Priscilla Woolworth is one cultured, beautiful, savvy green fairy! She was named "New Green Pioneer" by Times Magazine in 2009, and she is carrying the tradition of her iconic family name but as an eco-warrior.  She grew up between the country side of France and Maine and always felt connected to the natural world. She created her site, eco-almanac and on line home store so she could sell the things she wanted for herself. All the products she endorses are non toxic, from recycled material, long lasting and locally made. She also makes all her own cleaning material which you can see in the photo below (lemon peel, lemon oil, and water)! I had the pleasure of  meeting with Priscilla at her lovely home and garden which felt like being in the South of France with it's abundance of lavender, humming birds and bees . . .

1) How long has your site been up? 3 years and half years
2) Are you optimistic about the state of our planet? I am optimistic that enough people care to make a difference.
3) What is your favorite meal? Moroccan Couscous with a green salad
4) Are you a mermaid or forest fairy? How sweet-A forest fairy. I love trees, the forest, leaves, moss, hiking in the woods.
5) What product can you not live without? Olive oil. I use it on my salad, to polish my wood furniture, remove sticky labels on glass jars, and use it after the shower on my skin to make it so soft.
6) What book is by your nightstand? I have several: On the Future of Food by HRH the Prince of Wales; No More Dirty Looks by Siobhan O'Connor and Alexandra Spunt;  Beautiful and Abundant by Bryan Welch, Vogue and The New Yorker.

Edible Garden with Lauri Kranz

My vegetable garden was not in good shape. I had neglected it for a bit too long and the idea of replanting everything was so daunting, until Lauri Kranz from Edible Gardens LA came to my rescue. Lauri brought wonderful choices both in seeds and plantings, reorganized my planter boxes, fed my soil and helped restore my garden. She is so knowledgeable on all things related to plants and she loves to sprinkle in wild flower seeds in the beds to attract the bees. Lauri truly is a plant fairy! We planted cucumbers, shelling beans, okra, tomatoes, various basil varieties, herbs, peppers, lettuce, and more. . .

  1. How did you move towards edible gardens? I gardened as a child with my father.  When my oldest son started school, I needed to volunteer for an activity at his school and I chose gardening.  I loved being in the soil, in the garden and with the children.  From there, I took classes at farms, spent a lot of time in libraries and began a garden of my own.

2) What are some of the best things to plant right now?
Summer in Southern California means eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, melons, corn, cucumbers, okra, squash and beans.  Leafy greens are best grown here in the fall and winter when the days are not so hot.

3) Are you a mermaid or forest fairy? i suspect flower fairy?
My friend Anne calls me a garden fairy.

4) Are you concerned about the elimination of organic seeds?
I worry about the contamination of organic farms through pollen drift.  Farmers who have committed themselves to raising organic produce and non-genetically modified crops are finding that the winds are contaminating their fields with transgenic seed from neighboring farms.

5) What book is on your night stand?
The Table Comes First by Adam Gopnik

6) Where is your favorite meal?
At Suzanne Goin and David Lentz’s house.

Chicken Coop

Backyard chicken coops

Now that they are selling unique backyard chicken coops at William Sonoma we know this is a trend that is going to stay. These coops are beautiful and oh so refined! I had mine built by a handy man for a fraction of the price, but if you want to invest in a deluxe version these look so wonderful.

For a more modern and cool version I really like the ones by Kippen House a made to order coop from Seattle that also can be a garden space on top. These seem ideal for urban areas.
