Obsessed with Botija Olives

The benefits of the mini Mediterranean superfood

Lately I have been having a serious love affair with Botija olives. They hail from Peru and my favorite brand is Sunfood – Black Botija Olives. Most olives bought from stores are cured in lye which is toxic, but these are naturally cured with sea salt and picked when fresh on the vine. They are so utterly delicious that when you eat one it’s like a burst of savory joy in your mouth. These olives are high in selenium, antioxidants, vitamin A and E, iron, calcium and oleic acid which is a beautifying element.

Olives are one of the oldest foods known to man and were even mentioned in the bible. They are actually a fruit tree and native to the Mediterranean and northern Africa. Some say the Spanish Conquistadors brought clippings of olive branches and planted them in Peru and they flourished.

I have been adding these nutrient dense powerhouses in my quinoa dishes and salads for a surprise burst of flavor. I also will serve them with some organic feta cheese and crackers for a snack. We all need good fats to keep our brains and bodies supple and healthy, and this is one way to add that into our diets.
