Find Your Spirit Guide . . .

I recently went to see a spiritual guide, writer, teacher named Laura Amazzone. She had much to tell me about the path I'm on. She mentioned my Animal guide is a deer which was uncanny since I've been seeing them everywhere. I have animal cards that I use periodically, but Laura recommended Ted Andrews' book Animal Speaks which is now living by my bed. I've finally taken the plunge and removed the TV out of my bedroom. I did it mostly because I noticed I was relying on it to anesthetize my feelings after a hard day, and it was beginning  to become my emotional husband. I can still watch films in another room, but the bedroom is now my sacred space for reading and dreaming.

Animal Speak helps us identify, meet and attune to our spiritual guides. As Andrews so eloquently states: "Animals can restore our forgotten childlike wonder at the world, and they reawaken our lost belief in magic, dreams, and possibilities."

What is your spirit guide? What animal do you see throughout the day? What animals did you love as a child? Is there an animal that frightens you? So many things we can learn from these messengers . . .

Winter Solstice = Let It Go . . .

Almost every culture from Swedish, African, Japanese and Italian, to Persian and Peruvian regard the significance of Mid Winter night or the Winter Solstice. This is the longest night of the year, and the shortest day. It is a time for shedding the darkness of the past year and thinking of manifesting the future dreams. The solstice is usually between the 21st and 23rd. During this auspicious time it may be good to stay in, light candles or fires in the hearth, and write down goals and aspirations to come.

The Story . . . Sisters Calling
So I was at home tonight with my daughters and their friend. I was being a bit of a grump. I had a tough day being a chauffeur, tutor, and cook to my kids in addition to some work earlier in the day. Carrying the heavy firewood from outside reaffirmed by single status. I was just about to get to cleaning the dishes that were stacked up in the sink, when my fellow rose sister called and said "come, please come to a winter solstice ritual down the canyon!" I hesitated . . . "my hair is wet, my kids are wild, and I have dirty dishes in the sink. I can't" I said. "Oh come sister, you need to be here I feel it" she said. " . . . ahhh well I guess . . .  okay what the heck.  Let's go girls!!" We all jumped in the car and went racing down the canyon . . . down the road to where the ocean meets the hills. Up the stairs we went to a lovely fairy's house named Hayley who gave us mulled wine (sparkling water for the lasses) and had us anointed with her incredible oils that she distills herself. We then wrote down on a piece of parchment all the negative things we want to release, had our feet rubbed by another fairy named Jessica, and then dipped our feet in water that was infused with roses and herbs. The parchment was then burned by a candle surrounded by earth that would be buried back into the land. Having a few moments by fire light, magical oils and just connecting back to an ancient tradition totally transformed my perspective. I left feeling serene. Sometimes we need to go with the sisters calling. We can always wash the dishes tomorrow . . .

Extremely Loud . . . Incredibly Moving

I find myself avoiding books about 9/11. It just still feels too raw even all these years later; however Jonathan Safran Foer's book really was a cathartic experience. Foer is one of my most favorite writers because his compassionate soul comes through his work. His first novel Everything is Illuminated is an example of how one can touch us with humor. In his latest novel I laughed, cried, and just adored the nine year old narrator who was was as complex as Holden Caulfield is in The Catcher in the Rye. The film is coming out any day now with Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, so try to read the book before if you can.
Another favorite that centers around New York City is Let The Great World Spins by Colum McCann. The beautiful story-telling creates a Joycean like world where the characters are all connected in a brave, expansive way. I think this may be my most favorite in a long time. The myriad of characters get under your skin and stay with you.
