Memorial Weekend

Memorial weekend

May 29, 2011

This is a holiday about honoring those who fought for us, but I also feel
it is an interesting time to contemplate memory. Memory . . . so fascinating what remains and what fades. My grandfather who was a  two war veteran (WWII and Korea) would have been against the wars we have been fighting in recent years. From him I gleaned memories of sharing cheddar cheese and crackers, as we were sitting by a river in Yosemite, while he fished for rainbow trout. Who knows how those river moments have contributed to the adult me? Maybe that's why I will drag my girls every summer to my mother's house up in the Sierra Mountains to learn how to sit by the river and just be. Perhaps I want their memories to be built up with images that aren't just about consuming products. This is not an easy endeavor by any means, but worth the fight and complaints.

This week on The Local Rose I am so excited to share with you the incredible Mylk Man, who makes his almond milk using coconut water then delivers it to your house- old school style. We also visit with Clare Vivier at her new Silver Lake store, and take a look at the art at the Taylor de Cordoba Gallery. Also, let's dance by the sea with Mia Doi Todd singing her gorgeous new songs from The Cosmic Ocean Ship . . .
