Trees of Life
August 20, 2011
This last week I finally went to see Terence Malick's film Tree of Life. To be honest at one moment I felt like it was just a continuous examination of the same theme, and then when I stopped resisting the rhythm, I became transported. I felt the same sort of feeling one gets from reading a dense yet profound novel like Moby Dick or Brothers Karamazov. I realized how incredible the film was days after it was over. Certain images entered my consciousness, are living there and reminding me again about how the simple things will be what we wish for at the end of our days. The film also brought home to me the necessity of art in our lives. The fact that most public schools no longer support much of the arts is a travesty. Where would I be today if I didn't have access to the books, films, and music that helped form my being? Much of my cultural education came from watching Z channel the first cable movie channel in the 1980's. I miss those summer days when I would be alone in the house and I could switch on the TV and watch hours of Bertolucci and Goddard.
This week on Spirit we will discover a way to support the trees of our community with the social application Gaia. We also visit a few Silver Lake favorites. Designer and California girl Heidi Merrick who lives in Silver Lake, along with the folk art store Hemingway Picket. On Allure we discover a skin care line inspired by roses and gypsies.
I'm juggling many things these last days of summer, but writing to all of you and continuing the quest to find special roses has become such a joy . . .
