About three months ago I was absolutely low and empty. I literally felt as if I was unplugged some where, and had no zest for my life. I felt apathetic, without motivation, depressed, tired, despondent . . . you know the drill. It seemed like depression. I called and made an appointment with a psychiatrist to perhaps get some medication. I felt that maybe the tumultuousness of the last several years had left me with a mild case of depression. In the the last three years I had a small child, been through a divorce, had to move twice, remodeled a house, been sued, had a film venture I produced usurped from me, and just gone through the natural ups and downs of being a single mom. Big life changes can deplete one’s adrenals and endocrine system.

Before I went to see the psychiatrist I went to see Dr. Prudence Hall to get my hormones checked. I knew from the past that even though I thought I was too young for menopause,  my hormones could play havoc with my sanity. (Peri menopause actually can last up to a decade or more.) Dr. Hall discovered my thyroid was out of balance, and that I had absolutely no testosterone so she prescribed a myriad of supplements and creams. Honestly after the second day of taking a thyroid supplement I felt like my old self. I actually began to brush my hair!! I felt my old passions returning along with ambition, creativity, and get up and go – ness. The dark circles I had under my eyes and the limp hair also improved dramatically (tell tale signs of thyroid issues). The problem with traditional Western endocrinologists are that the testing they do can only decipher an issue with the thyroid once it has already been compromised. Doctors that are more holistic can discover the issue before you have slipped off the slippery slope. Needless to say, i never went to see the shrink; but I am wondering how many sisters out there are on anti depressants when their problem could be just a matter of boosting their thyroid. Dr. Hall can be a bit controversial and pricey but most holistic doctors can do a thyroid test. The Akasha Center is also wonderful in Santa Monica. Some natural supplements that can support the thyroid are licorice, zinc, kelp, and the Santa Monica Pharmacy has great formulas:

Thank you so much for this post. My husband has some of these same thyroid issues and want to look into herbal supplements. Mil gracias!
