Queen of Hearts: Saving and Protecting Honey Bees

July 22, 2013 | 5 Comments

honey bee hives, rescuing bees

Over a year ago I purchased a bar hive for my garden. I was getting so alarmed by the state of the bees that i felt compelled to do something. As Einstein said, “If Bees disappear off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live.”  Recently it has been discovered that pesticides are contributing to the colonies collapsing. The European Union has outlawed the use of the toxic pesticide nemonic while the US and Canada continue to douse it’s crops with this very toxic chemical. So the hive has been empty for the last year because I was waiting for a hive to take it over naturally. One day this last Spring I woke up to hear my little one saying “bees, bees, bees”! When I opened the front door I saw a massive hive forming on an olive tree I planted. It wasn’t just any hive . . . but a heart shaped hive. Always being on the look out for auspicious signs and miracles I took this as an omen that matters of the heart were going to be revealed, and that I needed to begin having Queen consciousness. As far as getting the hive from the front yard to the hive in the back, I contacted an organization called Backwards BeeKeepers .Please if you do find a swarm of honey bees, do not call the exterminator but bee rescues instead. I have been getting educated on bee maintenance by a very informative bee keeper named Ruth Askren. After a few sessions with her, reading a few books, and ordering a bee keeper suit I feel almost ready to begin being a serious bee keeper!

what an important thing to be doing.

a project called ‘johnny’s garden’ has been holding workshops throughout this month on the rooftop of one of the shopping centres here in Glasgow to promote urban beekeeping.

    go you!

Oh Shiva! This is such a touching and beautiful tale to awaken to this morning. What a gift…the bees, the rescue, the heart shaped home they have created. And yes, yes, all shall be revealed.
