Biblical Goat Cheese = S. Margherita

August 7, 2011 | 0 Comments

No this isn’t a scene from a biblical film where the animals have just disembarked from the ark, this is the incredible goat farm in Tuscany where one can get various flavor infused goat cheeses. Driving up the endless winding roads through the green hills outside of Siena, I didn’t know what sort of place we were going to. I just knew that it was a must for goat cheese lovers. When we arrived at the farm the image above was what greeted us. The goats were huddled on a hill, and truly seemed so serene and content. If only all animals could be this peaceful when supplying us with their gifts.

After walking through the farm area and stalls of the farm we entered the work room where you can also purchase the cheeses. Here is one of the ladies adding the flavors to the individual cheeses. In this case it is a sage leaf cheese. They come in a variety of flavors ranging from poppy seed to my favorite fennel seed. They package the various cheeses in sweet boxes that make this an exceptional gift.

The Story:
For my first ten years I grew up in the country side of Iran where I have vivid memories of walking to the neighborhood village for fresh baked bread Barbary bread and goat cheese. Part of the charm of being in Tuscany this summer, was that it brought me back to those great moments of living in a rural place. All the cheese at S. Margherita is unpasteurized as it is in most of these gourmet farms around Italy. I was raised on that pure form of food and so I truly know the benefits of it. Most people who are lactose intolerant are so because the dairy we purchase in the markets here has been so stripped of all the enzymes and nutrients that it basically like bleached water. I have been so devastated by the shutdown of the Rawsome Food Club in Venice. The illegal arrest of the owner James Stewart and Sharon Palmer of Healthy Farms is just an act of terrorizing the few of us who are demanding pure, holistic, untainted foods. The dairy industry is so worried that the masses will wake up to the truth about pasteurization, that they are systematically shutting down all the family owned, humane farms. instead of having the FDA focus on the series of deaths from the salmonella outbreak in turkey meat this week, our tax dollars is being sent on raids to seek and destroy milk and coconuts. Please take a look at what is happening around us and realize there is a food revolution afoot, that has more to with our rights as individuals than raw milk.
