Rainbow Jewels by Irene Neuwirth Part 1

I have never been a big fancy jewelry girl . . . that is until I paid a visit to the bright and beautiful world of  jeweler Irene Neuwirth. At her charming Venetian house on the canals, we tried on her gorgeous baubles and gems as I learned a lesson on the fascinating history of opals and emeralds. For example the diamond industry helped fan the myth that opals were bad luck to deter opal sales. I’m glad to hear that, since they are so absolutely beautiful with their changing colors! Irene’s clean yet opulent taste is seen throughout her house (in part 2) and of course in her stunning jewelry designs. Her use of color inspired by the sea is modern and the simple settings make such exquisite pieces where the turquoise, emeralds, opals and rubies can really shine. For example her earrings with a carved turquoise rose! If Irene’s house and jewelry weren’t enough of a love fest , her dog Teddy definitely stole my heart! 1) What inspires you?
I am really inspired by color. I love mixing unusual colors and patterns and shapes together.

2) I am so in love with opals right now and you seem to be as well. what can you tell us about these beauties?
Well, I am one of the largest opal collectors, I’ve been using them forever.  And I just LOVE them. They are so dimensional and look like the ocean to me. I think they are finer than anything else, diamonds included. I like that they are all one of a kind, and so unique.

3) What made you fall in love with your beautiful new nest?
EVERYTHING about it. I love it. It felt like a blank canvas- white floors, traditional bright, high ceilings, but cozy. And then of course I brought in the color!

4) What are the three most vital things when entertaining?
Great friends, great tequila, and delicious food!

5) What is your dream meal?
I like to grill, just about anything- steak, bbq chicken, lamb chops, grilled veggies, and a delicious salad.

6) Where is your dream vacation?
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I can’t get enough of it! It’s the perfect combination of a place that’s inspiring but serene, and so vibrant.

7) Are you a mermaid or forest fairy?
A mermaid! Definitely a mermaid.

8) Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully right here.

9) What book is on your nightstand?
The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls.  My friend Priyanka just recommended it to me.

10) What piece of jewelry do you never take off?
A good luck necklace I bought in Mexico.  Was gold, now silver….  eeek… how embarrassing is that?

Irene’s Jewelry is spectacular with many one of a kind designs using stunning stones and mesmerizing color and proportion. Every time I see her work, it is difficult for me to pick just one piece to call my own. Like art (which I think it is), Irene’s pieces draw you in. I have several pieces and find myself staring at them, captivated by the color and design of these sensational, yet completely wearable works.

I’d have to add an additional important ingredient to the “three most vital things when entertaining” and say That the first on the list is a great hostess. I have had the pleasure of visiting with irene in her home and she and her home are as warm and engaging as her amazing jewelry designs.

It was a memorable afternoon spent with great people, great food and a terrific hostess. And did I mention that the food was spectacular!!
