Feng Shui with Meghan Wallace James

June 1, 2018 | 4 Comments

I am a big believer in the practical and energetic functions of Feng Shui. I first began implementing this geomancy in my early twenties where I saw huge shifts in my life from it. The invisible forces that bind universe, earth and humanity together blend into this philosophy.

I first met Meghan a few years ago when I was holding space at a women’s event. I instantly felt drawn to her soulful blue eyes, and chick demeanor. I was so thrilled to hear that she has found her calling in the realm of Feng Shui. Her fierce intelligence, wit, grace, taste and background in design all have a place to flourish now. During her visit with me, she injected my home with new vitality, energy, inspiration and more. Her knowledge, experience and keen sense truly can elevate one’s space to the next level so that the home works for us in so many ways.

I hope you enjoy the interview with Meghan Wallace James…

What makes your heart sing?

My sons – my lovely redheaded wonders – Rogan & Shea. Intuitive downloads. Early mornings, a pot of French press, freshly laundered sheets. Legal pads. Road trips. Wild landscapes. Autumn. New York City. Vintage blazers. Dirty martinis. Epiphany texts from my clients – I absolutely live for those lightbulb moments.

How did you get called into the art of Feng Shui?

Symbols speak to me and I see in layers of visual metaphor. When I left fashion and dove into studying the healing arts, everything I gravitated towards was symbolic in nature: reiki, tarot & feng shui.

I believe feng shui lives within us all, as it harks to our primal human nature to seek out safe shelter – a warm, dry place to rest our head – very root chakra. I love connecting the root with the crown, guiding individuals into intuitive alignment through partnering with their home. As we clean, clear and align our outer world, our inner world follows suit, and before long, life is rocking and rolling.

There seems to be a transmission that happens during my feng shui consultations… as though I am counselor between human and home, a neutral conduit to reignite dialogue and passion between those that have become near strangers to one other. Our homes are so ready to communicate with us, to serve as portals for manifestation; all they ask in exchange is to be honored.

How does decluttering our spaces lead to more abundance?

Clutter is a series of unmade decisions. When you begin to clear the clutter, to make the decisions, you not only access clarity in mind and home, you create space for fresh energy to land. Abundant energy needs to be able to find you, to circulate beautifully and to have a place to rest.

I really like the way you prefer to use objects we already have in our home to activate an area. Is this a common criteria with traditional Feng Shui or our way of evolving the form?

Thank you! Single motherhood has infused my modality of feng shui with a practicality that continues to serve my family, my clients and our collective patterns of conscious consumption.

‘Shopping our homes’ is a reminder that we always have just what we need; it removes the waiting, the excuses, the excess. And stuff is simply stuff, for there is no magic talisman that will masque any underlying patterns of scarcity or fear that may be embedded into a space. Better to acknowledge your shadows and lovingly shine a light on them, rather than place a crystal on top and hope for the best.

I coax folks into embracing what can feel like radical emptiness, as we open up the home, giving it room to breathe. Space is an invitation for adventure.

There will be replacements or additions I suggest, yet I love when those are treasures purchased after the heavy lifting has been accomplished – the reward for the effort.

What are the three basic tips one should start with when using Feng Shui?

Only three? How about six please?

1. Cultivate a positive, multi-sensory experience when entering your home
2. Commit to a shoe-free interior; why track the remnants of your day through your sacred space?
3. Assign every item a home; this effectively eliminates clutter
4. Position your desk for monetization: facing out, thus providing space for new opportunities to approach, with your back against a solid wall
5. Close toilet seats and bathroom doors
6. Add life via fresh local produce, house plants and by hosting friends and family

What is on your bedside table?

Our bedrooms are metaphors for our love lives, whether or not they fall within the “Love Corner” of our home.

Beds carry such vibration. What is the story of your bed? Was it a hand-me down from a relative, or perhaps leftover from a former relationship? Consider the energetic ramifications, particularly if you are calling in partnership. To expand on the theme, consider your bedside tables: Do you have a pair? Are they matching? What do the contents communicate about the magic that is (or is not) happening in your bedroom? Shiva and I were discussing the opportunity to use bedside tables as ‘incognito altars’ for relationship, with one table more yin and one table more yang, to cultivate the delicious polarity of strong sexual attraction.

Back to the question at hand: I am such a devoted minimalist that I sleep on a Japanese futon bed – sans bedside tables. Sometimes I place a few art books or bud vases on either side of the bed. Balance is paramount.

Do you have a mantra or motto you live by?

In the midst of a 12-hour natural labor, birthing my eldest son, I received an inherent knowing: “You are here to heal cycles of abuse through beauty.” This mission statement has become my guiding light as I walk my Life Path.

Are you a mermaid or a forest fairy?

Forest fairy, for feeling Mother Earth beneath my feet simultaneously grounds me and reminds me of cosmic unity.

Where do you see yourself in a decade? What kind of space?

I was raised in a classic Victorian home, which my parents renovated themselves over the course of a decade. Growing up on an active worksite left a meaningful imprint, and turned me into quite a handy gal. I foresee renovating and flipping historic properties, my sons alongside me, learning the tools of the trade.

Feng shui keeps us forever evolving, moving through space and time. I had a teacher tell me: “As soon as you perfect a space, the Universe gifts you another.” I have found this to be true.

Love this entry. And clutter being unmade decisions is so true! I felt constant anxiety & could only concentrate on the clutter around me in my home office, instead of work.
