Renegade Gardener ~ Ron Finley

July 3, 2013 | 14 Comments

Ron Finley, Urban farmer, shiva rose, renegade farmer

I don’t really get fan crazy around movie stars. I do however get a little fan-atic when meeting my heroes in the anti-GMO movement. That was the case when I got to have a sit down with Ron Finley. I first heard about him last year when his now famous TED talk was released. I then got to meet him in person at an event I had for Vandana Shiva. This man really practices what he preaches. Aside from the good looks and charm, he really is a green warrior. The day I came to visit Ron he was having troubled juveniles work on the garden. I could see how these former troubled youths respected Ron and listened to his word. As he says, he’s “taking guns out of their hands and replacing it with shovels.” ย His words are gospel: Grow your own S*#T! That’s what will lead us to food freedom and our weapon against the big Agro companies that don’t give a damn if we ingest poisons. Video below!

I found your blog byway of Jeana Sohn’s blog and LA in Bloom. I have known Ron for a while and what he does is awe inspiring. This wa a great post. Keep on Sharing so the world will know how important this movement is long-term and to individuals who know and believe we are what we eat. “Grow your own shit” is the best coined phrase ever! I am an apartment gardener and it is working out for me. I used to garden in DTLA until we moved to the valley and a balcony came with our space. Go Ron and thank you for this post, Shiva!
